Advocacy Campaign

Arab Group for Protection of Nature (APN) launched its Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Campaign in the beginning of November 2005. APN made a number of advocacy campaign lectures at many schools such as the Orthodox School, dated Nov. 24th 2005 where 90 students and a number of teachers attended. This lecture was presented by Mr. Zakaria Musallam; an IPM specialist from the Ministry of Agriculture. Mr. Musallam tackled issues concerning the definition of IPM, its advantages in addition to pesticides and ways to protect one’s self from them.
The second lecture was at the Montessori school dated Nov. 26th 2005. This lecture was presented by Mr. Mutassem El-Hyari; a specialist in IPM.
Many students and teachers attended in addition to teachers from Al-Mashreq School. IPM brochures were distributed on attendants. The third school lecture was held in Philadelphia School on Dec 1st 2005 where many students and teachers attended. Mr. Zakaria Musallam was the lecturer for that day.
The last two lectures were held in Jordan farmers union (JFU) and Jordan Environment Society (JES) on Dec.4th and Dec 17th 2005. The attendants of the JFU lectures were farmers who were interested to learn more about IPM and ways to apply it. AS for the JES lecture, attendants were environment lovers and members of APN and JES. Brochures were distributed on attendants.

APN held an IPM training day took place on Nov. 26th 2005. Trainees attended from different organisations: Jordan River Foundation (JRF), Jordan Environment Society (JES) and Friends of the Environment Society (FOES). As well as representatives from 3 different schools: 3 students and 3 teachers, in addition to 5 nominated interested volunteers. The training session was divided into 2 parts; the first was on IPM presented by Mr. Samir Abddul Jabbar and the second presented by Mr. Muttasem ElHyari was on presentation skills. The presentation skills session focused on how to present ones case for example the IPM case.
The campaign included posters and brochures distribution by willing trained volunteers to many locations: Schools, Jordan Farmers Union, Jordan Environment Society, supermarkets, River Jordan Foundation, Friends of the Environment Society, Ministry of Agriculture, clinics, and pharmacies, Unions of Engineers, Union of Doctors and pharmacists and last but not the least Distributors of agricultural Material.
Other trained volunteers participated in distributing the brochures and answering questions in their own private gatherings.
APN with its IPM volunteers participated in the Free Trade and Rural Livelihoods day organised by Fair Trade Jordan – an alliance of NGOs such as: Jordan Hashemite Fund for Human Development (JOHUD), the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN) and IUCN – The World Conservation Union on Dec 10th 2005 in the Wild Jordan Centre, where development professionals, senior government staff, Media, major donors, private sector and olive oil producers and traders are the target audience. IPM brochures were given out and IPM posters were posted.
