The Group, represented
by its Director Eng. Razan Zuayter and Eng. Hasan Jaja, a member of the
Directors Board, conducted a visit to Lebanon during the period from 27
August to 1 September to investigate the human and environmental
conditions in the southern part of Lebanon and Beirut suburbs.
The visit included meetings with members of the Association of
Agronomists, officials at the Union of Agricultural Associations,
Friends of Environment Society, and Society for the Protection of
Nature, Norwegian Public Relief Commission and Green Line Society. The
meeting discussed mechanism for aids distribution and the volume of the
losses sustained by the various sectors in the stricken areas in
addition to future plans to remedy the impact of war and define the
forms of support needed for this purpose.
Their site tour around the devastated areas unfolded the tragic scenes
of the Israeli war as the Litani ravaged facilities posed an evidence of
the brutality of this aggression which targeted man, the land and the
environment and caused severe health and agricultural damages. The
official statistics recorded a total loss of USD 400 million in the
agricultural sector which included 4600 cows, 4750 beehives, 35000 sheep
and goats, 4000 dunums of vegetables farms, 750 hectares of olive trees
and 170 agricultural facilities.
At the health level, 7479 families including 40005 individuals were
driven away from Beirut, among them were 3029 children and a total of
37873 sick cases that consumed 43% of the medications supplied within
the relief campaign. 60137 citizens emigrated from the South and
included 16132 sick cases that consumed 13.5% of the medical aids;
whereas 40760 citizens fled Jubeel City and recorded 9084 sick cases
that required 6.4% of the supplied medications. On the other hand, a
total of 33359 emigrants left the Mountain, among them were 22842 sick
cases consuming 19.8% of the medications; while 25000 citizens were
displaced from AL Biqa’a and recorded 12448 sick cases that consumed
17.4% of the medications.
Furthermore, Eng. Sari Zuayter, member of the Directors Board, joined a
group from the Jordanian Civil Engineers Association in a mission to
implement an assessment of the damaged buildings in forty four sites.
