The Arab Group for the protection of Nature
calls for the Establishment of Amman National Committee (ANC) of the
International Seminar on (Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), Risks
and Impacts).

number of Civil Society Organizations and Non Governmental Organizations
to the first meeting for establishing Amman National Committee of the
International Seminar on (GMOs, Risks and Impacts) held on May 7-8th
2005 in Amman, Jordan. One of the major recommendations of the seminar
is to establish a National Committee to follow up on executing the
decisions of the seminar also to advocate the society on the risks and
impacts of genetic engineering.
Representatives of the following organizations attended: Jordan
Environment Society, Consumers Protection Organization, Friends of the
Environment Society, Jordan Farmers Union, Union of Jordanian
Agricultural Engineers, Jordan Veterinary Association, Public Health
Organisation, Royal Society for the Protection of Nature, Jordan Organic
Agricultural Association, and Food and Drug Association as an observer.
The recommendations of the international seminar were discussed in
details focusing on provoking decision makers to enforce a legally
binding national bio-safety framework addressing bio-safety in all
aspects with particular regard to genetic modification/engineering but
also including the recently developed Nanotechnology. Another focal
point in this meeting is to advocate the public on genetic engineering.
Amman National Committee (ANC) of the international seminar (GMOs, Risks
and Impacts) led by the Arab Group for the Protection of Nature agreed
on an agenda and a framework for its future meetings in order to start
executing the recommendations of the seminar.
