Razan Zuayter, APN general coordinator has participated in the meeting of the Sub-committee on the Eradication of Hunger in the Arab Region, at the headquarters of the Arab League General Secretariat in the Egyptian capital, Cairo.

Speaking at the meeting on November 27, 2019, Zuayter referred to the need to add a separate priority on fighting hunger and supporting resilience in regions affected by conflict, wars and occupation, and not just focusing on natural shocks. She noted that conflicts are the primary cause of high rates of food insecurity in the region, as indicated in the paper she presented at the meeting.

Zuayter reminded the participants of the ‘Arab Tree Path’ project, which was unanimously approved by the committee, stressing that it promotes the idea of sustainable development, self-reliance and territorial unity.  The participants agreed to hold a preparatory meeting for the project on 14 December 2019 in Amman.

In her remarks, Zuayter reminded of the importance of harmonizing and improving the triple nexus of investment and financing, development and peace-building by facing the root causes and resolve them to ensure a just peace not any peace, in order to achieve integrated responses in the fight against hunger.

The meeting was the third held by the subcommittee, held with the participation of representatives of a number of Arab countries and regional, international and Arab organizations concerned with sustainable development and the elimination of hunger.
