In a radio program, Jaja responds to comments of two MPs on the gas deal | The Arab Group for the Protection of Nature

Amman net radio station hosted APN Executive Manager and activist Mariam Jaja along with members of the Parliament Kamel Al-Zugoul and Mohammade Qatatshah to talk on Jordan's gas deal with  Israel. Jaja stressed the necessity to reject the deal due to several strategic, security, ethical and humanitarian risks.

She referred to the detailed analytical study that was developed by the "Coordination Committee Against Importing Gas from Israel" in partnership with energy expert Mika Minio-Paluello of the London-based Platform Research Center. The study shows that the share of the Israeli government from the deal paid through the Government of Jordan and funded by citizens settling electricity bills would reach a minimum of US $8.4 billion, whereas around US $2.93 are dedicated to Israeli companies.

She added that the deal will harm Jordan's sovereignty  where by a press of  button  may lead to Amman's complete electricity blackout. The two parliamentarians responded, defending the government's position of supporting the gas deal. Jaja called for the exploration of alternative sources of energy such as renewable energy and oil shale .She also stressed the urgency in speeding up the establishment of the liquefied  gas terminal in Aqaba that would allow gas imports from other countries. She pointed out that people should notbe held responsible forwrong decisions made by the government or its lack of planning.

Till now, the government had not presented any study showing the savings that would allegedly be achieved by  the proposed deal. She stressed that it is not proper to compare Jordan with the Palestinian territories   as Jordan is an independent state while Palestine is still under occupation.
