APN | Brazil

9 – 13 June 2025

APN participated in the Coordinating Committee meeting of the Civil Society and Indigenous Peoples’ Mechanism (CSIPM) of the Committee on World Food Security, held in Brazil from June 9 to 13, 2025. APN was represented by its Research and Advocacy Coordinator, Lisa Shahin, in her capacity as representative of the Arab Network for Food Sovereignty facilitating for the West Asia region.

In her presentation, Shahin outlined key challenges facing the Arab region, foremost among them the weaponization of food in Gaza, Lebanon, and Yemen, and the international community’s failure to address these violations. She also highlighted the lack of political will to rehabilitate Gaza’s local food system and the donor-imposed conditions that hinder the realization of food sovereignty.

She emphasized the critical role of local organizations such as APN in supporting community resilience and advancing food sovereignty through practical, on-the-ground initiatives.

In a special session attended by Brazilian government officials, Shahin delivered an intervention on the genocide and war of starvation in Gaza. She urged the Brazilian government to translate its public condemnations of Israeli aggression into concrete action, first and foremost by halting the export of crude oil and petroleum derivatives to Israel.
