APN's annual ceremony celebrates the launch of the 3rd Million Tree Campaign | The Arab Group for the Protection of Nature

To celebrate its achievements in Jordan and launch the Third Million Tree Campaign in Palestine, APN held its Annual Dinner on the 6th of December at the Intercontinental Hotel with the presence of more than 800 supporters. Participants were of all ages, from the youngest APN volunteer who is 8 years old, to artists and journalists.

Musician Charbel Rouhana and poet and novelist Ibrahim Nasrallah were guests at the ceremony.  Proceeds were dedicated to planting trees in Jordan and Palestine, as well as helping rehabilitate the agricultural sector in Gaza. 

The ceremony was MC’ed by volunteer Eng. Fuad Srouji and Eng. Zeena Jaja. A short film about APN’s activities and main objectives was screened during the ceremony.

In her opening speech, Eng. Razan Zuayter, president of APN said that “every time I stand before you I find myself unwavering about our right to life. When so many of you attend our ceremonies and support us, I have confidence that hope and work are much more beneficial than subservience, frustration, and despair. Despite all the madness that surrounds us, we remain strong in our determination and dreams. She told attendants that Jordan now imports 87% of its food. She also told them about the dramatic reduction in the size of grain cultivation locally, which fell by 57% from the period of the 60s and even the 90s.

She noted that while Jordanian citizens and other citizens of non-oil- producing Arab states spend 40% of their income on food, citizen of states that have sovereignty over their resources  spend only 6-10% of their income on food”. (Translated link: ) The ceremony included a poetry reading by the poet and novelist Ibrahim Nasrallah. He read some of his poems, including Survivors, Settlement, Small Dreams, and Notes.

 He began with the following verses:"Some people are like treesLike Pia Blossom, one giving fruit and the other shadeLeaves drop and fly with the wind of DecemberBut the martyr of the nation stands forever on the mountain of olives." This was followed by a performance by Charbel Rouhana and musician Elie Khoury, who volunteered to come from Lebanon for the ceremony. Charbel played some of his songs which created a patriotic and interactive atmosphere.  He performed his song What’s the Difference? which condemns sectarianism.

He also played Praise be to God which talks about Lebanese emigration and how the Lebanese and Arabs are sometimes exposed to inhuman treatment in the West. The last song he performed was Why Change? , which carries messages of hope that change will come soon. The event also included thanking all APN sponsors. () Group, organizations, and individuals who support APN with the implementation of its various programs in Jordan and Palestine were honoured as follows:Musician,  Charbel Rouhana, novelist and poet, Ibrahim Nasrallah, musician, Eli Khoury, the Palestinian Agricultural Relief Committees ( PARC), Palestinian Farmers’ Union, Al-Nahda Rural Society, the Jordan Valley Farmers' Union, Dr. Basil Burgan,  and volunteers Yazan Abu Jabara and Lamis Abu Aziza.At the end of the ceremony, APN gave away to the winners of ruffle tickets five bottles of olive oil from courtyards of Al Aqsa Mosque, the book Atlas of Palestine by the historian Salman Abu Sitta (book contains full details of Palestine's land and people with images, maps, and information about all the cities and villages of Palestine), a set full of poetic works of the late Jordanian poet Husni Fariz, and tradition rural dress donated by Mrs. Widad Kawar.
